Since October is Orthodontic Health Month, we wanted to talk a bit about one of the most important parts of orthodontic treatment – your dental retainer! It’s always a great feeling to complete your treatment, but your retainer is an essential part of the success too.
So, as we embark on the latter part of the year, we’re sharing a few reminders:
- Don’t forget to wear it.
The most important thing to remember is this – don’t forget to wear your retainer! Without it, your teeth naturally will want to go back to the way they were before. Wearing a retainer every night keeps them in place. The last thing you want to see happen is having to pursue orthodontic treatment again because you weren’t wearing yours.
- Clean it before and after you wear it.
Your retainer can accumulate a ton of bacteria between uses. If you wear it without cleaning it, that bacteria can get in your gums and cause oral health problems. So, before you use it, make sure to use gentle toothpaste and your toothbrush to clean it. You will also want to clean it afterward too.
- Take it with you when you travel.
This goes in line with not forgetting to wear it, but if you are traveling, don’t forget to take your retainer with you. Pack it with your hygiene kit, alongside your toothbrush and other items you want with you when you go. You’ve likely received a case for it after your treatment, but consider buying an eye-catching colorful case that you won’t forget to grab.
