Chances are you didn’t realize it, but February 9 was National Toothache Day. We didn’t have a party or anything, as no one wants to celebrate dental discomfort. But we do want to take the opportunity to remind you of the ways we can treat a toothache.
If your mouth hurts, call us ASAP at 770-844-6771. We’ll do our best to give you a same-day appointment. We’ll get you feeling better fast!
We’ll also give you guidance on easing your discomfort until you can get to our Cumming, GA office. For a toothache, it helps to apply cold compresses and to take an over-the-counter pain reliever like acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen. A topical anesthestic like Orajel can also help.
When you see your dentist, they can:
- Repair Dental Decay – If your toothache is caused by a cavity, your dentist can fix it with a filling. Our fillings are made of tooth-colored composite instead of metal. They blend into your smile so no one will even notice you’ve had a dental repair. For larger cavities, we will use a crown.
- Fix a Cracked or Broken Tooth – Since it completely covers your tooth, a dental crown can mend many kinds of damage, including cracks and breaks. You should address these issues as quickly as possible because they offer a way for bacteria to get inside your tooth and cause an infection.
- Get Infection Out of Your Tooth – A root canal treatment is how your dentist removes infection from your tooth’s interior. While root canals have earned a negative reputation, we’re not sure why. With your tooth numbed and dental sedation (if you’d like), it is a comfortable procedure. It saves a tooth you’d otherwise lose to extraction.
- Remove a Problem Tooth – In some cases, removing a tooth is simply the best course of action. Our dentists use a gentle touch, local anesthesia, and sedation (if desired) to ensure your extraction goes smoothly.
Luckily, it’s not too difficult to avoid toothaches. These three tips go a long way toward preventing them:
- Brush and floss your teeth daily. Always use a soft-bristled brush and don’t brush too hard. Overly aggressive brushing can damage your tooth enamel.
- Visit us every six months for an exam and cleaning. We’ll remove any deposits that have collected on your teeth to keep them cavity-free.
- Don’t open packages with your teeth or otherwise use them as tools. And avoid crunching down on hard substances like ice, popcorn kernels, or candies.
