In the meantime, you can:
- Drink More Water – It sounds pretty obvious. But increasing your water intake is one of the easiest and best ways to fight dry mouth. A rule of thumb is to consume about half your weight (in pounds) in ounces every day. So a 200-pound adult should drink 100 ounces. Most of us drink far less than that. The good news is, some of that amount can come from food and beverages other than H2O. Still, keep a water bottle handy and drink from it frequently.
- Cut Back on Alcohol and Caffeine – Alcohol and caffeinated beverages like coffee are diuretics, which means they dehydrate you. You should cut back on these drinks or, at least, drink more water to counteract their drying effects.
- Sleep With a Humidifier – Many of us breathe through our mouths while we sleep. That dries out your mouth and throat. Keeping a humidifier in your bedroom and running it through the night will increase the moisture in the air.
- Quit Smoking – Tobacco use is bad for you in lots of ways. You’ll experience many benefits if you quit smoking or chewing tobacco. One of them is a mouth that feels less dry.
- Check Your Meds – Many common medications, including antihistamines and antidepressants, cause dry mouth. If you experience a chronic dry mouth, consult with your doctor. They can review your medications and may be able to suggest alternatives that are less likely to cause this issue.
- Chew Sugarless Gum – One way to encourage saliva production is to chew sugar-free gum. Sucking on sugar-free candy helps too. For added oral health benefits, look for products that contain xylitol. The sweetener has natural cavity-fighting properties.
- Practice Good Oral Hygiene – To combat a saliva shortage, it’s important to brush your teeth daily, using a toothpaste with fluoride. Brush at least twice, for at least two minutes each time. Floss at least once too. This will help eliminate the buildup of bacteria that results from dry mouth.
