More than 1 million Georgians have diabetes, according to the Georgia Department of Public Health. Why are we mentioning this in a dental blog? It’s because diabetes can have a detrimental effect on your oral health.

Having diabetes can increase your risk of:

  • Gum disease
  • Dry mouth
  • Fungal infection (Candidiasis)
  • Mouth ulcers
  • Tooth decay

Knowing this, you need to pay extra attention to your oral care routine if you have diabetes. Our team at Inspiring Smiles in Cumming, GA wants to help however we can. Call 770-844-6771 today to schedule a dental checkup with us.

Intervention Can Be Good For Your Smile

Recently, a study was complete in the Netherlands involving patients with type 2 diabetes and oral care. The conclusion was that being proactive was beneficial for their oral health and for their overall quality of life.

The study included patients with diabetes who were receiving care from 24 different family medical practices. The participants in the study received:

  • Regular reminders about the importance of good oral health, including the need to brush their teeth twice per day with a fluoride toothpaste
  • Encouragement from their dentist and paperwork allowing them to see their dentist twice per year
  • Oral care kits with hygiene products and a brochure explaining the connections between diabetes and dental health.

More than 540 patients completed most of the 14-item Oral Health Impact Profile. This measured how often they had functional limitations, physical pain, psychological issues, and physical, psychological, and social disabilities. Baseline information was compiled at the start of the study, and this was compared to information provided one year later.

Patients who were in the experiential group reported more improvements in members of a control group.

Follow These Recommendations

The study is the latest evidence in support of anyone with diabetes making oral health a priority. As a reminder, the American Dental Association recommends the following three steps for good basic oral care:

  • Brush twice per day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss daily
  • Visit your dentist a few times annually for professional cleanings and exams

If you have a dental problem, our team of dental professionals can identify it and recommend solutions for you. In some cases, it is as simple as improving your daily oral care routine. In other cases, we will suggest treatments to remove the problem and restore your oral health.
